Hi Everyone,
After looking through the internet to try and find a fix to the fabled issue of "Game not connected" all I found was people continuously asking how to fix it! After figuring out what seems like to problem to me I thought I would make a post to inform the way I fixed it.
It seems like the issue is a result of Windows Defender blocking and removing the file "Hearthranger/boot.dll"
A quick / temporary fix is to disable Windows Defender by:
- Clicking on the arrow pointing upwards next to the time at the bottom right of screen
- Left clicking on the Shield that says "Windows Security"
- Going to "Virus & Threat Protection"
- Click on "Manage Settings" under "Virus & Threat protection settings"
- Finally, turn real time protection off
This fix works, however windows will automatically turn this back on when computer goes idle, restarts, etc.
So here's the permanent fix to this issue without disabling Windows Defender:
- Clicking on the arrow pointing upwards next to the time at the bottom right of screen
- Left clicking on the Shield that says "Windows Security"
- Go to "Protection History" under "Current Threats"
- Click on one of the "Threat Quarantined" options (most likely the more recent ones) until you find "boot.dll"
- Click onto "Actions" and select "Restore"
This should allow you to use HearthRanger without getting the error of "Game Not Connected"
This problem may also be an issue with other antivirus programs such as Avast or Malwarebytes blocking boot.dll, If the problem persists just check your antivirus to make sure that boot.dll is not being blocked by them - or turn them off completely (not ideal).
Hope this helped, as it seemed to be the fix for me.
Cheers,
Henry.
